Learn what Patient Check is, who it has been designed for and how it supports a more focused pharmacist final review.
Availability: Patient Check is available in Z Dispense v3.0 or later and is enabled by default at each dispensing workstation.
Patient Check provides pharmacists with a dedicated workflow for completing their final review, bringing together relevant patient, prescription and dispensing information in one place.
It is designed primarily for pharmacies where dispensing and the pharmacist’s final check are completed as separate activities, including technician-led dispensing workflows. It can also support pharmacists who dispense and check prescriptions themselves.
Review the patient, not just the transaction.
Patient Check helps the pharmacist review the current supply within the broader context of the patient and their dispensing history.
Watch: Introducing Patient Check
In this webinar, the Z Software Product team explains why Patient Check was developed, demonstrates the checking workflow and shares learnings from pharmacies that participated in the Early Adopter Program.
Duration: Approximately 28 minutes
Why was Patient Check developed?
When dispensing and the pharmacist’s final check are performed by different team members, some of the context available during dispensing may not be immediately visible to the checking pharmacist.
This can mean relying on a verbal handover or moving between different areas of Z Dispense to review the patient’s history, alerts, notes and prescription information.
Patient Check brings this information into one dedicated workflow, helping the pharmacist complete a more focused and contextual final review.
Patient Check supports the pharmacy’s checking process. It does not replace the pharmacist’s professional judgement or the pharmacy’s existing checking responsibilities.
Who is Patient Check designed for?
Patient Check has been designed primarily for pharmacies using a separated checking workflow, such as:
- A dispense technician prepares the prescription and a pharmacist completes the final check.
- One pharmacist dispenses the prescription and another pharmacist completes the final check.
- A pharmacy uses a dedicated workstation or area for pharmacist checking.
Patient Check can also be used where the same pharmacist dispenses and checks the prescription. Each pharmacy can configure the feature to suit its own workflow.
What does Patient Check bring together?
Patient Check gives the pharmacist access to:
- The patient and their prescriptions dispensed that day
- Scan Check status and the option to complete Scan Check
- Script Check and Price Check information
- The electronic prescription image, where available
- Relevant clinical alerts and SafeScript information
- Patient, prescription, drug, prescriber and Script History notes
- The patient’s dispensing history
- Differences between the current supply and previous dispensing
- The status of each check and the pharmacist who completed it
Patient Check and Scan Check
Patient Check does not replace Scan Check.
Scan Check confirms that the product selected for supply matches the dispensed prescription. Patient Check provides an additional pharmacist review workflow that brings Scan Check information together with the patient’s history, clinical information, notes and other relevant checking context.
When configured, scanning a dispensed label can open Patient Check instead of the existing Enhanced Scan Check window. Scan Check can then be completed from within Patient Check.
Getting started
Before using Patient Check, consider:
- Where the pharmacist’s final check occurs
- Which workstations need access to Patient Check
- Whether scanning a dispensed label should open Patient Check
- Who will complete the final review
- How your team will monitor pending and completed checks
