This update for Z Dispense is progressively being released to all stores and you may not have received the new update and features yet.
What’s New in this Update?
Updated Z Dispense to 64-Bit
We have updated Z Dispense from 32-Bit to 64-Bit. This allows the application to take advantage of more system memory and improves performance and long-term compatibility with newer operating systems.
This is an internal change only - you should not notice any difference in appearance or functionality.
Patient Check
We have added a new Patient Check feature. Patient Check brings the pharmacist's final review into a dedicated workflow, providing relevant patient and dispensing information together to support a more focused check.
Accessing Patient Check
- Go to Z Dispense > Patient Check
- This should bring up the Patient Check Selection window:
It will show all scripts dispensed for the selected date, defaulting to today's date.
The Patient Check Selection also gives you a quick snapshot of the scripts and their status. You can expand to view more details of a patient’s script by clicking on their name:
You will be able to see the Patient Check status of scripts as well. If there are any scripts dispensed on that day for a patient that hasn’t been completed, it will display the group as Pending.
Performing a Patient Check
There are currently 2 options available to perform a patient check – either through the Patient Check Selection Window or Enhanced Barcode Scan.
Patient Check Selection Window
As mentioned above, you can perform a patient check through the Patient Check Selection Window.
In the Patient Check Selection, you can either:
- Scan the script barcode in the search window to bring up the patient’s scripts dispensed on that day:
- Search for the patient in the search window and double click the script you wish to perform the patient check on:
Enhanced Barcode Scan
You can enable the Enhanced Barcode to automatically bring up the Patient Check window. With this setting enabled, instead of opening the Enhanced Barcode Check when scanning the dispense label, it will bring up the Patient Check window instead.
To enable this setting:
- Go to Settings > Workstation > Patient Check
- Tick ‘Active Patient Check upon scanning dispense label from Dispense’
- Press Save
Navigating Patient Check
There are multiple sections in Patient Check that can help you review the patient and dispensing information
Patient Details
In the Patient Details section, you will be able to see the patient’s name, PRF details, entitlement details, contact details and date of birth.
If the patient also has an IHI and registered for Active Script List, you will be able to access their My Health Record and Active Script List.
Active Script List will be view only and you won’t be able to select scripts to dispense:
Patient Check List & Medication Details
The Patient Check List will show all the scripts that have been dispensed on the same day as the script that has been selected to review in Patient Check.
Selecting the script in this list will bring up that medications’ details for Patient Check. If you move away from a script where the Patient Check hasn’t been completed, we will alert you that you haven’t completed the previous check:
The Medication Details will display the medication name, directions, PBS Code (if available) and Price. You can also print the CMI or Edit Script through the button or the keyboard shortcut ‘E’ or trigger the printing options
Scan Check

If you have the multiple pack enabled for Enhanced Barcode Check, it will display the number of packs or broken packs and their status:

If you haven’t completed a barcode scan for the medication, you can also scan the barcode of the medication straight into Patient Check which will bring up the Enhanced Barcode Check, then correctly refresh the Scan Check status in Patient Check.
Script Check, Price Check & Script History
The Script Check, Price Check & Script History section helps you compare the script against the Patient’s History.
We currently flag the following:
The legend will appear at the bottom of Patient Check as well for your reference.
These colours will be highlighted in the Script Check and Price Check against the Script History for you to compare any differences in the medication.
In the Script History, we compare the generic category of the medication to highlight any differences between the scripts. We also highlight the differences between medication, QTY, Prescriber and Price as well.
For medications that have no differences, they will be highlighted in green:
eScript Viewer
For Paperless Scripts (eScripts and eNRMCs), we will display the eScript in our dedicated eScript Viewer section to help you view the paperless script information when performing the Patient Check:
If there is no eScript to display, then it will show ‘No E-Script to Display’.
Clinical Alerts
The Clinical Alerts section will display useful clinical information for the medication:
If the medication is new, it will display the ‘New drug for patient’ alert. If there are any MIMS interactions or duplicate therapies, these will also be displayed. You can click on the View Details to view the interaction or duplicate therapy alert.
We also display the Real Time Prescription Monitor (RTPM) alert that had appeared at the time of dispensing:
Notes
The Notes section will display the Patient, Script, Drug, Prescriber and Script History Notes so you can quickly check any notes for the patient or script.
We will display the latest 2 notes of each note category, but you will be able to click on the View More link to go through all the notes available:
You can also click on the + Add Note link to quickly add additional notes as needed.
Completing a Patient Check
Once you have reviewed through the script and want to complete the Patient Check, you can press the ✓ Complete button or the keyboard shortcut Enter.
The Complete Patient Check prompt should appear with the logged in pharmacist's initials. You can either press Complete to proceed with these initials, or change the initials first and then press Complete to proceed.
Once the Patient Check has been completed, the pharmacist details who completed the Patient Check will appear in the top right of the Medication Details, alongside with the date:
If you need to uncomplete a Patient Check, you can use ↶ Undo Complete button to undo the existing check. It will prompt you to enter in your initials to Undo:
Disabling Patient Check
Patient Check will automatically be enabled on all workstations. If you wish to disable Patient Check on a workstation:
- Go to Settings > Workstation > Patient Check
- Untick ‘Enable Patient Check’
- Press Save
